Uncle Rik

Biography

‘Uncle’ Rik Volkaerts joined Bacon Fat during the last months of 2019, after Tommy McDuff decided to leave the band for personal reasons.

Rik was born a long time ago and started drumming at the age of 15.  He played his first gig on September 23rd, 1977.  Since then he played in about thousand bands including Big Bill, Binger, Mark Marshall Band, Phil T Lizzy and Iese Daase.  There’s bands he doesn’t even remember he played in.  What’s for sure is that he played all over Europe.

Rik and W. Johnson met about 20 years ago and stayed in contact on and off throughout the years.  When asked to join Bacon Fat by the end of 2019 Rik immediately agreed.  When W. told Rik that he wanted to play with him since 1994 -when W. saw Rik play a gig with the Mark Marshall Band- it seemed things were coming together at last.

As Rik puts it: ‘Since I’m playing with Bacon Fat I simply lost my interest in all the rest.  This is something I want to go for full force ahead and nobody will stop me even if it is the last damn thing I do!’
